We have Space RAILGUNS! | Space Game Devlog #5

In their fifth development vlog, the creators of a space game showcased updates including enhanced engine effects, new planetary environments, and the introduction of a powerful railgun on the Destroyer ship, alongside improvements in game atmosphere and user interface elements like radar and health indicators. They also discussed their focus on environmental design, ship modularity for easier customization, and the use of Adobe Substance Painter for texturing, while inviting community engagement through their Discord server and expressing excitement about the game’s progress and future plans.

In the fifth development vlog for their space game, the creators showcase significant updates to the Destroyer ship introduced in their previous video. They’ve enhanced the game with new engine particle effects that scale in strength and size based on thrust force, accompanied by updated audio effects for a more immersive experience. Additionally, a new planet and moon environment have been added, featuring improved fog effects to enhance the atmosphere. The developers are particularly excited about the introduction of a front-mounted railgun on the Destroyer, which is realistically set to fire at speeds of 3,000 m/s, although currently without a fire rate limiter for testing fun.

The development team has also been focusing on environmental designs to diversify the game’s setting. They’ve experimented with different distances and layers to create a dynamic background, including a large moon and a gas giant, to simulate habitable planets or bases on moons orbiting large planets. Early prototypes of destruction effects have been introduced, showcasing explosions with multiple layers of particle effects. These enhancements aim to build out the game’s destruction mechanics, with plans to add more detail to the explosions in the future.

Rich, a team member, has been busy improving the game’s user interface. The updates include the beginnings of a radar system, health indicators, and an ammo reader, all of which are currently placeholders but are essential for testing the game’s readability and functionality. These improvements are part of the team’s efforts to enhance the overall player experience by providing important information in an accessible and intuitive manner.

The vlog also touches on the ship modularity system that allows for the customization of ships with various components affecting the overall stats. This system is expected to simplify ship building in the future, making it easier and quicker while ensuring a lot of upfront work to get it functioning. The team has also been working on texturing ships using Adobe Substance Painter, highlighting the ease of texturing compared to older methods and expressing a desire to add dynamic ship names to the sides of ships.

The development team is excited about the progress made just one month into development, starting from January 2nd. They discuss the challenges and achievements of the past week, including the implementation of the railgun and UI improvements. The team also encourages community engagement through their Discord server, where they share daily progress and invite ideas and contributions. They hint at more features and tweaks to come, including ship AI and weapon damage properties, underlining their commitment to the game’s development and their enjoyment of the process.
